I know today Friday 3rd of April we would be due to go on our Easter Holidays. I’ve put togther some updated schoolwork for those of you who would like to keep a routine going next week.

Senior Infants
English
Continue with the sounds book, revising sounds and blending words on the blending pages.
Parent can call out one or two words a day and child can try their best to write the word.

Continue practising writing in the green writing copy.
One/ two days, instead of writing in the green copy, children can write their “News”. Focus more on news from the child’s life. Children should be familiar with writing their “news” from school. Start by getting them to tell you something interesting they did/ played/ made recently. Children can copy/ trace your writing and then try to write one line independently. 2/3 lines is plenty for Senior Infants! Normally we put it in this format:
Today is Monday.
It is sunny.
Yesterday I played ball with my dog Spot.
Spot loves to play.
He wags his tail.

Maths
This week we will focus on money!
Your child is learning about 1,2,5 and 20 cent coins. Your child needs to know the mathematical language associated with money- dear, expensive, cheap, cheaper, Which is cheaper?, How many?, count, money, brown, copper, What colour is a coin?
Playing and pretending with real coins is the best way to teach him/her, nothing beats hands-on experience.
Here are some maths activities/ games that you could do with your child to help their understanding.
Matching Coins
If you have a pile of old coppers/ change around, as most houses do, ask your child to sort the coins, putting all the 1c together, 2c together, 5c, 10c and 20c
Play Shop
Ask your child to set up a play shop. They can collect some items to sell and make some price tags for them. Try to make sure the items don’t cost more than 20c They can pretend to be a shopkeeper/ customer, practise buying items, and giving change.. Make up some questions about the items or get your child to make up the questions, for example:
How much does the packet of cereal cost?
Which is dearer/ more expensive, the apple or the orange
I have 6c, have I enough money to buy the carrot?
Trading Coins
Practise swapping coins for other coins that make the same value, for example, if you want to swap a 10c, your child could hand you a 5c and a 5c, or five 2c coins.

Science:
Based on the story “The Runaway Ice-berg”
Investigate floating and sinking- Things that are lighter than water float, and things that are heavier than water sink.
Give your child a basin of water and some items they can test out in the water. Get them to predict whether the item will float or sink! They can make a list of items that float and a list of items that sink if they like.
Make and Do: Once children have a little understanding of floating and sinking, they could see if they can make a “lifejacket” for a lego man/ or a man made out of playdough out of materials such as cork, sponge, cotton wool, polystyrene, newspaper, bottle caps, balloons, swimming armbands or aeroboards.
