If you are unsure of where to start with helping your child at home here is a list of tips and priorities of activities:
- Child colours, draws or writes something everyday
- Read a story to your child everyday
- Some reading/blending activity (putting sounds together to make words). Regular practice is more important that lengthy duration. A little goes a long way every day with this. You can use Twinkl, Junior/Seniors phonics resources and worksheets as a guideline.
- Some reference to Tricky Words. This could be informally in environmental print or using the children’s cards.
- Counting actual items. One to one correspondence with the item as it is counted.
- Grouping items such as lego, dolls, blocks into groups to match a number.
- As much outdoor activity as possible
Here is a list of possible outdoor activities:
- Looking for bugs/insects
- Looking for signs of Spring (buds, flowers etc…)
- Pretend play e.g. set up a shop, hospital, vet, fire-station, school, café etc…. outside in yard
- Home-made obstacle course using household items such as boxes, brush handles, chairs, rope etc…
- Homemade fairy garden or bug hotel using stones, leaves, sticks, flowers etc…
- PE/exercise class with parents or siblings
