At Nicker National school, we believe that physically active children have more active brains!
Only 1 in 4 children in Ireland get the recommended one hour of activity per day in order to stay healthy!! That means that 3 out of every 4 children are not getting enough exercise to stay healthy.
At Nicker NS we have started on the road towards earning an Active Flag in order to encourage our pupils to become more active and healthy. Active brains learn better. To achieve the Active Flag there are many different things we need to do.
Active Flag Committee
We have set up an Active Flag Committee. The Committee are in charge of PE equipment and are currently doing an audit. They will decide what we will prioritise for our next PE equipment purchase. The committee meets regularly.
Playground Leaders
We have already started on the Playground Leaders program. 5th and 6th class pupils run the program every Wednesday at break and lunch time. They have a timetable of activities and engage each class group in different types of sports or exercise. Some examples are penalty shootout, parachute games, basketball, lunchtime disco and relay races.
Activity Breaks
Every class is engaging in activity breaks during the day. Ms. Franklin’s 5th and 6th and Ms. Moore’s 2nd and 3rd have listed some destinations that they are going to run to by doing the equivalent mileage around the school. Ms. Blackwell and Ms. Hourigan are dancing throughout the day to GoNoodle and will also be starting the Operation Transformation inspired Ten at 10.
